Question by Jay:
Is there a way to strip ads from a webpabe by using either server side or client side scripting?
I am working with someone that needs a specific site blocked killingtime.com… They need it blocked from both search results and from directly typing in the address… I just had an idea though to try and find a way to strip the ads out of pages… This isnt to mess people out of revenues via the web but to keep younger children from seeing porn on the side and top of this site… Any help would be greatly appreciated…

——————————————

Answer by Estelle
Use CSS – you can make the ads “display: none; visibility: hidden;”

You can also use JavaScript and the DOM to do it if there are frames that you have to target and they are served from the same server. Use PHP to only impact killingtime.com – that way it will be squashed before it is sent to the browser.

Hope that makes sense.

Question by Thomas M:
How do I use javascript with a yahoo site? I am using the same script I use on other (profile pages). Place?
How do I use javascript with a yahoo site? I am using the same script I use on other (profile pages). Is there a certain place where I have to insert the code?
I am using sitebuilder (the newest version).
an example of a code that is not working:

Awesome! The second answer gave me the hnt I needed. I changed the section (to the end) where I inserted the Java and ‘voila!’ it worked! The exact same code worked.

Answer by A J
Javascript can be used anywhere within html. Put between script tags, like this.

Answer by Ron
Yes, but it is not as secure as usding a server side scripting language. This might work for you, but you have to sign up for free account to get it:

Question by shortpc89:
Using a database variable inside an option value in a drop down box?
I want to put a drop-down box on my gaming site. The user will be able to click on the box and the box will drop down and show a list of games that are in the database. Each game listed in the box will have a link to it. The link will be generated based on the ID of the game in the database.

At the moment, the code I have right now is this:

The Javascript:

The dropdown box:

<?php
$ connection = mysql_connect("mysql1046.servage.net","mmocraze","jk1jk1jk1");

//Selects the Games table
mysql_select_db("wp_MMOCraze_games", $ connection);

//The query to run on the table with variable set for WHERE gameName
$ gameName = $ _GET['gameName'];
$ gameName = strip_tags($ gameName);

$ query="SELECT gameName,gameId FROM wp_MMOCraze_games";

$ result = mysql_query($ query) or die(mysql_error());

while($ row = mysql_fetch_array($ result))
{

$ row['gameName']= str_replace(' ', '-', $ row['gameName']);
?>
echo “
<option value='http://www.mmocraze.com/game-directory/game-profile/?gameId=" .$ row['gameId']. "'>” .$ row['gameName']. “

“;
<?php
}
mysql_close($ connection);
?>

The problem is that when it shows up on my site, the actual names of the games do not show up. Instead the code shows up. For instance, ” .$ row['gameName']. ” will loop itself over and over again int he menu and the link, when clicked on, will look like this: http://www.mmocraze.com/game-directory/game-profile/?gameId=” .$ row[

Here's the code my friend sent me (without the javascript and action page (haven't tried it yet):

<?php

$ sql = "SELECT gameId, gameName FROM game ORDER BY gameName";
$ result = mysql_query($ sql);

while($ row = mysql_fetch_array($ result))
{

$ gameId = $ row['gameId'];
$ gameName = $ row['gameName'];

print(”

$ gameName

“);

}

?>

Can anyone help me with this?

——————————————

Answer by Riley
this is usually because you have not shut with a ” or ‘ can you link me?

Can someone tell me how to make a myspace adding site script using mysql??? Me and a friend want to make one. He has a site but we dont know how to make a script for mysql and how to connect it to the website. We want to be able to record how many points they have, if they have vip and whatever all the other sites have. We have experience in coding somewhat. But I dont see that being needed. We just need help with the mysql part of it all. Thanks if you help me.

Answer by Hex
A Myspace adding site?

If you are speaking about the link then that is easy…

Here’s a link to your MySQL script:

http://www.xpence.net/temp/myspacelink.txt

It creates a database called: myspacelinks
Then it creates a table called: content
Finally it inserts the first record into
the table. The first entry is the link to
myspace.

Feel free to message me for more info.

Question by tobbe_hunter:
Can a server (using php) handle things for players without anyone being on the website?
We’re using php. We wonder if we can set a timer to like 30 minutes, and then the server will run a php script once the timer runs out, even if there are no one on the site to load pages.(We’re making a game like travian and wondering how to make the attacks like they are in travian)

——————————————

Answer by sney e
Yes, there is. The simplest way I have heard is to use cron:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cron

Most webhosts should have it or something equivalent at the least. It’s a bit hard to briefly explain, but the wiki page linked and source below will give more detail. Basically, you would use an entry in your crontab file like this:
# Run each 30 minutes
*/30 * * * * /path/to/file.php

On a specific webhost there will probably be more automated ways to do this, you should email your host if you cannot find anything about it.

If it’s on your own server, this might help a little:

http://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/how-do-i-add-jobs-to-cron-under-linux-or-unix-oses/

Question by timbobelmo:
Javascript using var to enter domains?
My work uses this great code at the top their page….

Then in the HTML code the following is put to make it work:
<img src="[imghost]/lp/blahblah.jpg"

When the page loads and the user views it it reads: src=" http://blah.images.com /lp/blahblah.jpg"

It automatically puts the domain information in case you need to change it. In my case, I'd like all items to point to ".com/future/" then when I am done with the new site simply change that original java script to remove the "future" and push the testing site live. My company uses .pd files…but that shouldn't make a difference. I have examined all the code and cannot make it work on my site, doesn’t look like I’m missing anything. Suggestions? Or maybe a different way to do this? I am using .php for my site. Thanks!
