php/sql freelance – tiny question about pricing?
Hey all,

I’m a 15 year old web developer/designer who can code html, css, php & sql however one of my friends is asking me to make them a massive script (has given me a long deadline!(summer holidays))
However I know how I am going to attack this puzzle awaiting to be created and solved, however I am not sure how much to charge.

I’m generally doing coding for experience, fun and generally help people for free (small scripts), however as this is a very huge project ( secure upload files, search, add news, edit, delete, report, manage, listen, ranking, top 10, latest etc…) i’m not sure how much to charge.
I know some projects simillar to mine (like social networking sites) can get quite a few hundred, however as it’s a friend and i’m working with teens (such as myself) i’m thinking about £30. any suggestions?

Personally, I like it. The only recommendation I would make would be to use another color or 2 to break up all the yellowish color. Other than that, I think it looks pretty nice. Seems to be organized (I cannot read the language, so…) and not too busy. As far as the script, not sure what to tell you. Good luck though : )

It sounds like you want to display an RSS feed within your HTML website. The easiest/best way to do this is to use RSS2HTML a free PHP script. This means that you can retain the complete control of the HTML layout (using templates) and make it match your existing design. Additionally using PHP rather than JavaScript will mean that search engine spiders can “spider” the contents of the RSS feeds.

I really like horse sim on the web horse games. But some parents wont grant there children PAY TO PLAY. Now that is not fair.

I would do free. And then let the players that are willing to pay, let them pay for whatever the free people dont get.

You need to be hosting your site on a server that runs scripts to do this, and that server needs to have a mail server running. How you then do this depends on the script language your site runs.

Alternatively, you might be able to redirect your mail form processing to another server – take a look at http://www.mycontactform.com/.

What you would do here is host the form page for the mail on your site, but redirect the form action to the mycontactform site.

With regards to Adsense, you are granted to add in one page the following: 3 ad units, 1 search box, 1 ad link unit. You can add them to pages that conforms to the policies — e.g. do not put them in a page where you have no content except the ads; do not put them in a pop-up box. I strongly advocate that you read the Terms of Service and Program Policies to make sure that you are doing everything right.

In terms of earning money on Adsense, your mileage varies. One website with the 10,000 uniques a day can earn a month while another might earn ,000. It is not simple to predict how much you will earn from Adsense. The only way you can learn about how your site will perform with Adsense is through trying it.

The amount you can earn will depend on the

1. Responsiveness of audience to the ads = A travel website that provides information on travel to Spain will attract visitors looking for ways to arrange their travel and spend money on their vacation to Spain. Your site provides the info, but the ads will provide hotels, travel agencies, tourist destinations, automobile rentals — ads that are likely to get the attention of the users of your site. This is a site that will most likely do well with Adsense. However, if you are a gaming website where the main purpose of the user is to play games on your site, then Adsense will not perform as well.

2. Ad format = some types of ads do superior than others depending on your content and layout. In our case, massive rectangles in the middle of the content is the best, while leaderboards do not generate as much as income. Skys are the worst for us. Experiment and measure the results via channels and see which formats work ideal for you.

4. Ad colors – sometimes ads mixed into the content works wonders, but sometimes ads that contrast your site colors work best

Maximize the granted number based on the resulting look of your page (you do not want an overkill of ads). Users going to your page and reading your content might ignore the banner or rectangle at the top of the page, but might click on the ad at the bottom of the article

6. Smartpricing – the huge unknown in Adsense. No one knows how this actually works. But it can affect the pricing of the ads on your site. If the advertiser paid for .50/click – but your site is smartpriced – then the cost might be discounted lower (e.g. .25). So you might try to develop a site based on high paying keywords but if smartpricing gets to you, then you might not get as much per click as what you are anticipating from your keywords.

Experiment with the factors above (except smartpricing, which you cannot control), and see which combination works best. Remember though that not all sites do well with Adsense – even if you get gazillions of traffic but your visitors are not interested in looking for ways to spend their money, they will not be interested in your ads and will not click.
